[ This post is in partnership with Spirit Airlines, as always – all opinions are my own.]
Did you check out my Disney Recap?
If so, then you already know that we flew Spirit Airlines last month to get to Orlando.
While I have flown with international budget airlines before, this was my first time flying with a US based budget airline. Spirit Airlines is the leading Ultra Low Cost Carrier in the United States, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Latin America – serving 39+ destinations!
Spirit’s total price saves you 30 percent more than other airlines, on average, by unbundling ticket prices.
4 Reasons Why Spirit is Different
- Ultra-low fares
Home of the Bare Fare
Their fares are fully unbundled. No “free” bag. No “free” drink. Other airlines bake those options right into their ticket price. They don’t. A ticket with Spirit will get you and a personal item from A to B.
- Options
They call it Frill Control
They believe in paying only for what you use, not what you don’t. You get to control your options and never pay for someone else’s “free” bags.
- Fresh planes
They have a fit fleet
Spirit has one of the youngest fleets flying. They’re safe and fuel-efficient, and that saves you money.
- Cozy seating
They are plane simple
Spirit adds more seats to their planes because when you fly with more people, the cost per person goes down. The seats are simple: they don’t recline, so you don’t wind up with someone’s head in your lap.
Still want the extras?
Spirit has them! While the Bare Fare doesn’t include extras that certain passengers may not want – you can absolutely still have them. They have a great menu filled with water, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, muffins and snacks that can be purchased. Click HERE to check out the menu.
A few other extras that you can purchase prior to your flight if you would like are:
-Travel Insurance
-The Big Front Seat
-Carry On Bag
-Check In Luggage
To help save you time and money while traveling with Spirit:
- Buy bags early: If you know you’re going to need a checked bag or carry-on, buy it early and online to save major money.
- Personal item included: One personal item is included in the Bare Fare – something like a purse or small backpack
- They’re light on legroom: Spirits a cozy airline. They add extra seats to our planes so we can fly with more people.
- Get the big front seat: For a little extra cash you can secure the Big Front Seat.
- Print your pass at home: Save yourself some money and print your boarding pass at home. It costs you $10 to print at the airport.
- Refreshments for purchase: Your Bare Fare doesn’t include refreshments – even water. Beat the system by filling up a water bottle after security.
- Travel insurance is available: They don’t give refunds if your plans change. Insurance is available to protect you from the unexpected.
- Join the $9 Fare Club: Looking to save even more? Join the $9 Fare Club for access to exclusive travel deals and special bag prices.
What is the $9 Fare Club?
When you join the $9 Fare Club, you’ll get exclusive access to some of the lowest fares available, as well as discounted prices on bags. Plus, you’ll get special deals that are available only to members of the $9 Fare Club. Joining costs only $59.95.
I’m a big fan of budget airlines because they take you where you need to go at a super affordable price. My experience flying Spirit was great! The seats were comfy and the plane staff was helpful. Click HERE to head to their site to plan your next getaway!
I saw a reasonable fare on Spirit recently, but decided against it when I heard all the horror stories about the fees. After reading this, perhaps I should give Spirit a try.
I really think it’s such a misconception people have about “fees” – they (budget airlines) are very transparent about what is including in their fares and it’s a great way to fly for people who want to get where they are going safely and for a good price. Thanks for reading!
I love budget airlines and fly Spirit half a dozen times a year at least! Where else can you get round trip tickets for close to $50! And we never have to pay extra for anything. Just pack light!
Exactly!!! Are you part of the $9 fare club?
This is helpful! A lot of people hate on budget airlines like Spirit because they don’t know what they’re getting into before flying, but they’re a great way to get from point A to B at a low cost.
100000% I am such a huge fan of budget airlines and I think that they are the perfect way to get to where you want to go, at a really great price. Spirit flies to so many destinations I want to go to also so that helps.
Very useful, havent come across them myself. Great branding – makes them memorable!
Thank you! I agree – love the colors they use for the planes too.
I love your travel posts, always so informative. Spirit flies from my local hub but I was always iffy about veering off and using other airlines vs. big carriers. Totally will now. Thanks!
awww thank you so much!!! thanks for always being so supportive
Super helpful post. Would love to check out the airlines myself some time. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for reading!
Very helpful tips. I had a bad experience with Spirit but may give then a another shot.
I’m sorry to hear that! I think giving them a 2nd chance would be great.
I have never flown with Spirit and had no idea that they are one of the youngest fleets flying. I like to recline my seat, but If it’s a short flight I don’t mind if the seats don’t recline 🙂
Agreed! I always recline but didn’t even notice it didn’t recline until the end of the flight this time lol
We’ve only flown airlines using miles in the past 8 years, but I always check budget airlines like Spirit just to make sure we’re getting the best value for our miles. If Spirit were to ever work out timing wise for us – I’d definitely give them a try!
I do that too! Love taking advantage of miles.
I’ve not heard of them before but I like how open they are about what they do and don’t offer. For me, legroom is a big issue, so I may struggle, I’d need to know actual seat pitch in their bigger legroom seats. But great to know about the airline.
Thanks for reading!
I love budget airlines! I’ve never heard of them before but will definitely check them out in the future! Great tips that you’ve given. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for reading!
I know a lot of people snuff budget airline travel, and I definitely think there’s a time and a place, but I love it. I love the challenge of getting a really cheap flight and navigating the rules for minimal travel. Thanks for sharing Spirit! I’ve never flown with them before, but I will check it out!
yes! totally agree – thanks for reading!
I’m a big fan of Spirit, I just wish they flew to & from Canada! As long as the plane is safe and the pilot is trained, I’ll gladly pay less and do without the frills!
Absolutely!!!
I have a love hate relationship with the budget airlines we have in the Uk! The price is fab but often the service is terrible, spirit maybe seems to have better service and the seats looks super nice compared to others I’ve flown with!
Will have to give them a try when flying in the states
